Bringing It All Back Home
by Terrence McNally
A Letter from the Director
"One, two, three, four.
We don't want your fucking war."
"No Blood for Oil."
"Education not Bombs."
From World War I to Vietnam, Yellowstone burning, LA quaking, and 9/11/01: We Will Never Forget; Americans have faced death and destruction.
And as a nation, we are resilient. Maybe it's our country's youth that causes our resolve.
Or maybe it's our youthful naivete that causes our fortitude. A vicious lady named Katrina devastated hundreds of thousands of lives.
We rehearsed our play, went to work, donated a couple bucks to the Red Cross, and cracked open a cold one while discussing our
government's pitiful response. Because, "Oblah de oblah da, life goes on." But we all change, whether we choose to be conscious of it or not.
We Americans can so quickly compartmentalize emotions and retreat into our "little boxes." But if we don't acknowledge the political and
psychological ramifications of these events including our personal and social responses in the aftermath, then a chain reaction occurs.
History repeats itself. Still, we must survive. Like Dad says, "Life continues. That's the beautiful thing about death, life continues."
Perhaps ignorance can be blissful. On the other hand, perhaps knowledge is power. Watch the six o'clock news or not, it's up to you.
It's a free country after all...
